In a Vase on Monday | 28th August 2023

Bright late summer colors are everywhere! Dinner plate dahlia Holland Festival, a couple of particularly charming striped bedding dahlias, godetias and ‘Happy Lights’ figleaf hollyhocks in the back. The buds on the hollyhocks are closed right now, but one is a matching pink to the godetias and the other is a very dark purple.

Rudbeckia ‘Prairie Sun’ is proving to be one of the longest-lived cut flowers I’ve ever had. Some of the stems in this bunch are three weeks old, the rest are from last week.

Sunflowers that I have absolutely no memory of planting, so they might have been from birdseed or compost? They popped up in my herb bed earlier this summer and there they stayed, since I figured the veg garden could use a little more color. They’re mid-sized plants with a nicely sized flower for vases, so these are now in my bedroom.

Finally, more lilies because there’s a never-ending parade of them at this time of year. This bouquet includes a frilly double-petaled oriental lily that hasn’t opened yet but, I will definitely get a picture when it does.

This is a post for Rambling in the Garden‘s In a Vase on Monday meme!

      1. It is… right up until I have to figure out how to preserve it all and then how to sneak more vegetables into my kid’s food without him realizing it 😂 Especially now that I’m growing ever less familiar varieties of vegetables! After his highly affronted reaction to the purple potatoes, you can bet he’s not going to know what’s in a dish until after it’s eaten lol

  1. You’re a woman after my own heart with all those floral arrangements, Angela. I love the dahlias and so wish I could grow a double-petaled lily but those appear to be outside the scope permitted by my climate 😦

    1. Life’s too short to wait for bouquets to come to you, especially when you know best what you like! And gosh, I vividly remember both the opportunities and limitations of Southern California gardening all too well. Grew up in OC before moving halfway across the world, and remember sighing sadly over peonies and lilies and other cottage garden favorites. Now I’m nursing my palms and strelitzias and citrus indoors over the winters! It’s always something, eh?

  2. It is always interesting to see what other gardeners are putting into their bouquets. You had me looking up Rudbeckia Prairie Sun it is a stunner, and to think the flowers last so long. It has been added to my seed list for next year. Many thanks.
