In a Vase on Monday | 27th April 2026

I wasn’t expecting to join in for another few weeks. There’s nothing I can actually cut in the garden yet — overnight temperatures are still hovering around zero and there are very few things that even qualify as a leaf at the moment. But I have a pelargonium on the windowsill that’s been blooming nonstop since last autumn, and when I trimmed it back for cuttings this weekend, it seemed a shame to just compost the stems.

Then I remembered these little bud vases my sister-in-law gave us. So here they are: two happy pelargonium flowers in the front hallway, keeping us company while we wait for the garden to catch up.

An early start, but a promising one.

  1. Oh a perfect red flower to start. My garden is slow waking up here so I do understand. I frequently have to use store bought flowers, but isn’t any flower we have perfect for a vase.

    • Exactly! And really, I love that my reasoning has now become “well, I need something to post, so getting this bouquet is JUSTIFIED….” 😏

  2. Oh these pelargonium are so lovely, and they must be especially cheery for you when you have nothing else to cut – thanks for sharing them. I am intrigued by the simple wooden animal next to them, and although I can’t see a tail I am thinking it might be a dinosaur – is there a story to it?

    • Awww, thank you! Yes, that pred pelargonium may be common as heck, but she’ll always hold a special place in my heart for being just so… extra. The wooden animal is a turtle my son made in fourth grade wood shop! He brought it home one day and it’s been making the rounds decorating different rooms where I need something a little whimsical. The tail isn’t visible, but it’s a little brown leather scrap. It just happens to be a very long-legged turtle 🤣

    • Thank you! For the longest time those sat empty because I couldn’t find anything with stems small enough. Now I’m starting to get ideas about repurposing old perfume bottles to make more bud vases…
