It’s midsummer week, which means the two oldest and most dependable perennials on this property are ready for their annual close-up.
Our midsummer peony and our midsummer rose have had an especially good spring — plenty of sun, plenty of rain, the kind of weather that translates directly into blooms. More blooms than usual, actually, which meant I could fill the vase to bursting without feeling like I was stealing from the garden.
I’m looking forward to waking up tomorrow to a beautifully scented house.

I can smell the aroma!
Yes, the only bouquets that outperform this pairing, scent-wise, are the big lilies that will start appearing later this month. Scent gardens have become something of an obsession over the years…
What a pretty mix! I suffer from a severe case of peony envy as, other short-lived success with one Majorcan species, I’ve yet to get one to bloom in my part of California.
For what it’s worth, though, you live in rose heaven!
They are lovely together. The fragrance must be divine.
It really was. The midsummer rose punches well above its size for scent.
Peonies and Roses–you can’t go wrong! And the colors are great companions, too. Lovely!
So gorgeous! 😍
That’s a lovely combination, Angela – I hope you were not disappointed this morning! I love the contrast of the yellow stamens. I have one like that called City of York – do you know what variety yours is?
Mine is Rosa pimpinellifolia ‘Plena’ — here it’s called juhannusruusu, literally “midsummer rose”, because it blooms right at midsummer. I just looked up ‘City of York’ and it’s a floribunda — much fancier than my wall monster 🤣 Very lovely, though!
Oh, I can imagine how good they must smell. Enjoy!
