Autumn is fully upon us and I really am wondering where all that time went. Still, we managed to accomplish quite a lot around the property this summer and it will definitely make next year’s upkeep a lot easier. Now it’s time to start weighing harvests and cleaning things up as nights cool down.

One — It’s Not Yew, It’s Me

Hydrangea arborescens ‘Annabelle’ has been in several of my bouquets this past month because it produced an abundant number of flowerheads this year and they tend to last for a very long time both on the plant and in the vase. It’s still vying for space with that yew, which is slowly but surely being cut back and tamed. I would honestly love for the hydrangea to take over that entire space and it seems to share my sentiments.

Two — And the Borage Wore White

I was wondering earlier this summer whether any white borage survived from the initial seeding two years ago and here’s my answer! No idea why it took a month later to flower compared to the blues, but I’m happy to see it.

Three — Weighing In

A typical late August harvest. 1.5kg of Annabelle potatoes (no relation to the hydrangea), destined to be made into tonight’s garlic parmesan wedges, and an assortment of tomatoes: ‘Gardener’s Delight’, ‘Yellow Submarine’, ‘Quadro’, ‘Green Grape’, and ‘Organza’.

Four — Ra-one-culus

My very first ranunculus to flower at the house! Between these and the freesias, I might have finally broken the curse.

Five — I’m Still Standing

The Reliance peach that I thought was a goner has produced one very determined sucker, which I will support for as long as it manages to grow. I think this tree was grown from its own roots, fingers crossed, but will check with the source just in case.

Six — Picasso’s Autumn Period

Amaryllis (Hippeastrum) ‘Picasso’ decided it wanted to flower in the autumn this year and I have no complaints.

  1. I like the whimsical phrasing you used in introducing your 6! And I envy the late Hippeastrum flowers too. In prior years I’ve had some late flowers from mine but right now it’s just too darn hot for them!

  2. Beautiful Amaryllis!
That’s interesting about the borage – I need to find some white-flowering seeds for next year. I tried to grow it for the first time this year but got only two rather small plants. Hopefully they’ll self-seed!
